Book Review by Johanna Riddle, January 2010
Review 4
pages from the "Hot Food & Warm Memories" Cookbook
|
| Barbara Napier, a personable
cross between Alice Waters and Tasha Tudor, has become
renowned for her gourmet vegetarian cooking and organic
gardens, and the warm hospitality she showers on guests at her
rustic Appalachian bed-and-breakfast. Snug Hollow, an
eco-friendly, 300-acre farm encircled by gentle mountains,
where Barbara’s mouth-watering meals are served at a long
dining room table adorned with candles and fresh-cut flowers.
A secluded, idyllic retreat, Snug Hollow has been featured in
such publications as Southern Living, Midwest Living, National
Geographic Traveler, Frommer’s USA and Kentucky Monthly.
Beautifully illustrated with gorgeous
color nature photography of Snug Hollow’s flora and fauna, as
well as Barbara’s bounteous kitchen, Hot Food & Warm Memories
is a 123-page treasure that includes the author’s inspiring
insights along with her best-loved recipes. “Stuffed green
peppers, pot pies, bean soup, mashed potatoes, macaroni and
cheese or even a good cheesy pizza are my favorites,” she
writes. “I stick to my Kentucky roots where we grow it, cook
it, eat it or can it.” |

Snug
Hollow Farm is nestled in the beautiful Red Lick Valley of Estill County
in Central Kentucky just 20 country miles east of Berea, Kentucky.
Conveniently located 45 minutes from Natural Bridge State Park, Red River
Gorge, Renfro Valley Music Hall and 1 hour from Lexington, Keeneland and
the Kentucky Horse Park. It is an organic farm that boasts 300 acres of
babbling creeks, glorious wildflowers,
abundant wildlife, wooded mountainsides and the simplicity of country life
both past and present. The area is Appalachia at its best and a stay is an
authentic experience in “holler hospitality.”
Accommodations consist
of a restored log cabin and a spacious two story
farmhouse with 2 comfortable bedrooms and private
baths. The Farmhouse sitting room invites guests to read a book by the fireplace,
enjoy the panoramic views, or simply daydream. Spend a lazy afternoon
sipping tea in the sun-dappled kitchen, browsing the library loft or
enjoying the charming sunroom. The roomy porches are a favorite place to
catch a cool breeze as you watch the wildlife by day or stars by night.
Perhaps you may enjoy the cozy chestnut log cabin with fantastic views,
handmade quilts and all the comforts of a genuine home in the mountains.
You may be lucky enough to nap to a rain on the tin roof. |
A
secluded Bed & Breakfast, Snug Hollow is described by many of its guests
as a safe environment in which to rest, relax, and grow. It is a perfect
place to experience the unforgettable magic of things still wild and
roaming. Whether it is bird watching, lending a hand in the garden,
stargazing, silent retreats or a weekend vacation sitting in the sun by
the pond, this snug little hollow has a restful charm that may add a new
dimension to your life. We are known as the perfect writer's retreat with
many writers visiting us for inspiration. A truly wonderful Kentucky Farm
Bed and Breakfast! |
